Plainly: it is an AI assistant
The Schakel assistant is not a person and not an accountant. It is an AI assistant that can read and update your Moneybird administration. It gives no tax advice, files no VAT return and does not produce annual accounts. What it does is take the tedious typing off your hands: reading receipts, preparing invoices and quotes, logging hours and showing what is open.
It can get things wrong, like any language model. That is why confirmation is central. The model never executes anything itself. It proposes an action, Schakel shows a preview, and only after your yes does it go to Moneybird. You stay in charge of your administration, you just type less.
What you can do with it
Everything you do in Moneybird day to day that fits in a short sentence:
- Send a photo or PDF of a receipt or supplier invoice, so it lands in Moneybird as a purchase booking with the file attached.
- Have an invoice or quote made in plain language, with a preview first.
- Log hours on a project and turn them into an invoice later.
- Ask what is outstanding, how much revenue you have or what still needs processing.
- Get notified when a payment comes in, an invoice is overdue or a receipt is missing for a payment.
Privacy in short
Before you start sending, you want to know where your data goes, so here it is without detours.
- The language model is DeepSeek. For each turn your message goes along, the latest messages of the conversation and the data from Moneybird needed to answer (such as invoice lines, contact names and amounts). For a photo, the photo goes along. We do not promise that this processing happens only inside the EU.
- WhatsApp runs through Meta. Messages you send over WhatsApp are therefore visible to WhatsApp itself. If you do not want that, use the chat in the dashboard.
- Voice messages are transcribed with Cloudflare Workers AI. You see the text back in the conversation, so a misheard amount shows immediately.
- You can see every conversation in your dashboard. Only your own verified number can talk to your administration, and STOP stops the assistant immediately.
How it works in three steps

Connect Moneybird
You start with a Schakel account and grant access to your Moneybird administration through Moneybird itself, without a password. Schakel proposes VAT rates, ledger and bank from your administration and you adjust what is off.

Verify your WhatsApp number
This is optional. You verify your number with a code and confirm it is yours. Only that number reaches your administration. Without WhatsApp the chat in your dashboard works.

Write or send a photo
Type what you need, or send a receipt. The assistant shows what it is about to do. You answer yes, adjust or say no. Only after your yes is it in Moneybird.
What it can do
- Read receipts and supplier invoices (photo or PDF) and book them with the file attached.
- Prepare invoices and quotes as drafts, on your confirmation.
- Log hours and turn outstanding hours into an invoice.
- Answer questions about outstanding invoices, revenue, a VAT indication and unprocessed bank transactions.
- Hold bank payments against your open invoices and propose to link them.
- Send notifications about payments, overdue invoices, missing receipts, a monthly summary and the end of a VAT quarter.
What it does not do
- No VAT return, annual accounts or tax advice. A VAT overview is an indication, not a return.
- No writing to or chasing your customers. Overdue notifications go to you.
- No editing an existing invoice or quote, no deleting a contact, no paying a purchase invoice.
- No accounting packages other than Moneybird.
- Never sends, credits or deletes anything without your yes, not even when you set everything to automatic.

Is this a real bookkeeper?
No. It is an AI assistant that works inside your Moneybird administration. It gives no tax advice and files no returns. For questions about rules, deductions or your annual figures a bookkeeper or accountant remains the right person.
Can I connect Moneybird to WhatsApp?
Yes. You connect Moneybird to Schakel through Moneybird itself, without a password, and then verify your WhatsApp number. From then on you can write to the assistant on WhatsApp. Without WhatsApp, the same assistant works in your dashboard.
Is anything booked without my yes?
Anything that goes to a customer or involves money always asks for your yes first: sending, crediting, deleting, registering payments and changing contacts. For invoices, quotes and receipts the assistant shows a preview first by default. For small actions you can choose to turn confirmation off.
What does it cost?
You can try the assistant free for 30 days, no credit card needed. After that you drop back to the free plan unless you choose a paid one. The current plans are on the pricing page. WhatsApp itself costs nothing extra.
Where does my data go?
