Go to API in the main menu

Log in to mijn.bunni.nl and open the administration you want to connect. Click API in the main menu. You land on the API Keys tab; next to it is API Reference, which you do not need for this.

Create a new API key

Create a new API key. Bunni calls it API Key 1 by default. Name it Schakel, so you know later what it belongs to.

Tick what Schakel may do

An API key has a tick box per call, grouped by part. Tick: Categories (read), Contacts (read and create), Invoice Designs (read), Invoices (read and create) and Tax Rates (read). Nothing more is needed: Schakel reads your categories, VAT rates and invoice designs, and creates invoices.

Copy the key

Copy the key Bunni shows you. It starts with bu_live_. Do it straight away: if you cannot find it again later, simply create a new one.

Copy the link to your administration

Look at your browser's address bar while you are logged in to Bunni. It reads something like https://mijn.bunni.nl/administratie/yourcompany/.... Copy that link. The part after /administratie/ tells Schakel which administration it is, because the key itself does not say.

Paste both into Schakel

In Schakel, go to Connections, click Connect an account under Bunni and paste the link and the key. Click Connect and test. Schakel tests the key against your administration straight away and tells you if a box is missing.

Worth knowing

The key belongs to one administration. If you run several administrations, create a separate key in each and connect them one by one.
After connecting, you pick your invoice design, your revenue category and which Bunni VAT rate belongs to which situation in the connector settings. Schakel proposes what matches your rates; do check it.
Payments are linked to the invoice in Bunni itself, as you do with your other invoices. Schakel books the sale and the customer, not the payment.

If something goes wrong

Schakel says the key is missing a permission.: Open the key on the API page in Bunni and tick what Schakel names. You do not need a new key: paste the same one again afterwards.
Schakel says the key does not work.: Check that the link belongs to the same administration you created the key in: a key only works for its own administration. If the key was only half copied, create a new one.
No invoices are being booked.: First check in the connector settings that your invoice design, revenue category and the standard VAT rate are chosen. If they are, open the log: when an order needs a VAT rate you have not chosen yet, such as 9% or outside the EU, it says which one.

Once you hold the keys, this is where they go. Every connector below talks to Bunni.
