Creating and connecting your Etsy app

You create your own app at Etsy once and give the Keystring and Shared Secret to Schakel, which lets Schakel read your orders and fees. Etsy approves this app type instantly, so there is nothing to wait for. It takes about five minutes and needs no coding.

    Create a seller app

    Open the registration form and choose seller app. That is the type for your own shop, and Etsy approves it straight away. Name it Schakel, for example. If it tells you that you already have a seller app, that is fine: use the existing one, since Etsy allows only one per shop.

    Open your apps overview

    Go to your developer dashboard. Your new app is listed with a Keystring and a Shared Secret. The secret is hidden; click the eye icon to reveal it.

    Add the callback URL

    Click the three dots next to your app and choose Edit callback URLs. Paste the callback URL that Schakel shows you on the connect screen, using the copy button beside it. Copy it exactly: Etsy is case-sensitive and rejects a trailing slash.

    Paste both values into Schakel

    In Schakel, go to Connections, click Connect an account under Etsy and fill in your Keystring and Shared Secret. Click connect, approve on Etsy, and your shop is connected.

Worth knowing

  • Your Shared Secret is a password. Do not send it by email or drop it in a shared document.
  • Schakel asks for read access only: your orders and your shop details. Nothing in your Etsy shop is changed, deleted or sent.
  • Etsy allows one seller app per shop. If you already use that app for another tool, you can share it: add Schakel’s callback URL alongside the existing one, which stays put.

If something goes wrong

Etsy says "Only the app owner may authorize a seller app".
You are signed in to Etsy with a different account than the one that created the app. Sign out, sign in with your shop’s account and try again.
You land on an error page instead of back in Schakel.
The callback URL in your app does not match exactly. Copy it again with the button on the connect screen, and watch for capitals, https and a trailing slash.
Schakel says the credentials are invalid.
Copy the Keystring and Shared Secret again, with no space before or after. The secret only appears after you click the eye icon.
Your app shows "Pending Personal Approval".
You created a personal app instead of a seller app. Those are reviewed by Etsy, so they can sit waiting. Create one through the seller app registration form instead, which is approved instantly.
